Embracing 'Bleisure': A Journey of Discovery and Reflection

By Britta StallingOctober 11, 2024

To escape the summer heat in Cyprus, my husband and I embarked on a two-month journey through South Africa and South America in July and August. Our goal was to combine our professional projects with leisure time, a concept now popularly known as "Bleisure"—the blending of business and leisure. We had many exciting stops planned, so I decided to leave my travel reading at home. However, in the library of our first accommodation in Cape Town, a book caught my eye: "Thoughts heal" by Albert Kitzler. Amazingly, it was the only German book on the shelf!

As a Qigong practitioner, I am naturally curious about anything that involves the focused and upright use of our consciousness. I began reading Kitzler's book right away. He presents a fascinating perspective on how ancient philosophy can be applied in modern life to lead a more conscious and fulfilling existence. What a discovery! I wasn't familiar with this book before, and it felt like a small miracle.

Kitzler emphasizes the healing power of reflective thinking—contemplating our values, potential fears, and how we can achieve inner peace and balance through the power of changing our thoughts. By fostering self-awareness, balancing reason with emotions, and practicing ethical principles, we can bring about positive changes in our lives. Kitzler connects ancient wisdom with practical advice for personal healing and the art of living.

The Synergy Between "Thoughts heal" and Qigong

The insights from "Thoughts heal" align beautifully with my positive experiences in Qigong, as both are centered around inner harmony and well-being. Kitzler highlights the healing effects of reflection, while Qigong promotes similar balance through mindfulness, meditative movements, and the cultivation of upright thoughts. Both practices encourage self-awareness, self-knowledge, and inner peace—Kitzler through conscious thinking, and Qigong through dissolving internal blockages, strengthening vitality, mental fortitude, and harmonizing Qi.

Both mental reflection and the energetic practice of Qigong help reduce stress and lead to a balanced, healthy life. Inspired by "Thoughts heal" and Qigong, here are some reflective questions you can use to foster your own inner healing:

  1. Independent of others, what are your own values, beliefs, and life goals? What is truly important to you?
  2. What genuinely makes you happy? Does what you consider happiness (e.g., material things, status, recognition) truly lead to long-term satisfaction?
  3. How can you lead a fulfilling life based on your personal values?
  4. How do you handle emotions like fear, anger, or joy? Are you controlled by them, or do you consciously perceive them and then decide to control them?
  5. Are you in harmony with others, yourself, and nature? How can you live more harmoniously and avoid conflicts?

Qigong and "Thoughts heal" invite you to reflect on your true self, your personal happiness, and your approach to emotions, fears, and suffering. By contemplating the meaning of life, relationships with others, and the balance between reason and emotion, you can live consciously and find inner peace and healing.
