The Five Immune Systems in Zhineng Qigong: A Different Way of Looking at Health

By Kristen PolsAugust 12, 2026

Over time, through working with our teachers, preparing programmes, listening to sessions and getting to know the people within our community, my understanding has gradually changed. One of the programmes that has particularly stayed with me is The Five Immune Systems in Zhineng Qigong.

I remember first coming across the concept and thinking:

Five immune systems?

What does that actually mean?

Like most people, when I heard the word "immune system", my mind immediately went to the physical body. I thought about getting sick, staying healthy and the body's physical ability to protect itself. But the more I learned about the Zhineng Qigong approach, the more I realised that this was asking a much bigger question: What does it really mean to be healthy?

Looking Beyond the Physical Body One of the things I find fascinating about Zhineng Qigong Science is its holistic perspective. Instead of viewing the body as a collection of separate parts, it explores the relationship between consciousness, emotions, Qi and the physical body. The Five Immune Systems approach takes this idea even further. It explores five interconnected dimensions: Consciousness. Emotions. Energy Field. Membrane. Physical. At first, these can sound like completely separate concepts. But when you begin to consider your own everyday experience, the connections become easier to see. Think about a stressful day. Something happens. You have a thought about it. That thought creates an emotional response. Your body reacts. Your energy changes. You might become tense, tired or restless. Perhaps you sleep differently that night. One experience can move through the whole system. This is what makes the Five Immune Systems so interesting to me. It encourages us to stop looking at health as something that happens only within the physical body.

The Consciousness Immune System

The first area we explore is consciousness. Our thoughts, attention and intention influence the way we experience the world and ourselves. In Zhineng Qigong, consciousness is not simply something we use to think with. It is an important part of our practice. We learn to become more aware.

Where is my mind?

What am I focusing on?

What am I directing my attention towards?

Can I become quieter?

Can I consciously guide my mind and Qi rather than simply reacting to everything happening around me?

These questions are simple, but I have found that they can become surprisingly powerful. In a world where our attention is constantly being pulled in different directions, learning to consciously gather the mind can itself become a practice.

The Emotional Immune System

Then there is the emotional immune system. Emotions are part of being human. We experience excitement, frustration, sadness, fear, joy and everything in between. The goal isn't to stop having emotions. Instead, Zhineng Qigong encourages us to develop greater awareness of our emotional state and its relationship with the rest of our being. When we are emotionally overwhelmed, we often feel it physically. When we are calm and settled, our entire experience can feel different. This perspective invites us to become curious about those connections rather than simply labelling emotions as "good" or "bad".

The Energy Field Immune System The concept of the energy field was one of the ideas that took me longer to understand. Within Zhineng Qigong Science, Qi is understood as a fundamental part of life, and the Qi field is an important aspect of practice. We don't simply practise as individuals. We also learn how to cultivate and work within a Qi field. This becomes particularly interesting when practising in a group. There is something unique about coming together with other people, becoming quiet, focusing the mind and practising with a shared intention. Even after working with Life Changer for some time, I continue to find the experience of a group Qi field difficult to fully describe in words. It is something that is better experienced than explained.

The Membrane Immune System

The membrane system introduces another fascinating dimension. The body's membranes create boundaries while also allowing communication and exchange. Within the Five Immune Systems framework, this provides another way of considering how the body maintains balance and interacts with its environment. What I find particularly interesting here is the idea that health isn't simply about what happens "inside" us. We are constantly exchanging with our environment.

We breathe.

We eat.

We move.

We interact with other people.

We experience our surroundings.

We respond to changes around us.

The membrane system gives us another lens through which to explore these relationships.

The Physical Immune System

And finally, there is the system most of us probably think of first: the physical body. This includes the physical structures and functions that support our health and vitality. But within this approach, the physical system isn't isolated from the other four. It is part of the whole. Our physical experience is influenced by our consciousness, emotions and Qi, while our physical state can also influence how we think, feel and experience the world. This interconnectedness is really at the heart of the Five Immune Systems.

From Theory Into Practice What makes this programme particularly interesting isn't simply learning about five different systems. It is learning how to work with them. Zhineng Qigong is a practice-based system. We don't only sit and listen to someone explain a concept and then move on. We practise. We become aware of the mind. We work with Qi. We use movement. We cultivate stillness. We develop intention. We explore the Qi field. And through repeated practice, we begin to develop our own experience.

This is one of the reasons I think the Five Immune Systems programme is so valuable. It gives us another framework through which to understand the relationship between different aspects of ourselves, while giving us practical methods through which to explore that relationship.

Why This Programme Has Stayed With Me

After almost two years of working within Life Changer Worldwide, I've encountered many different teachings, practices and programmes. Some have immediately made sense to me. Others have taken time. The Five Immune Systems is one that I keep coming back to. Perhaps because it asks us to look at something we all care about—our health—from a perspective that is much broader than we are normally taught. It encourages us to ask questions rather than simply accept assumptions.

What role does consciousness play in our health?

How do our emotions influence our experience?

What happens when we consciously cultivate Qi?

How do we interact with the Qi field around us?

How are all of these things connected to our physical body?

And perhaps most importantly: What can I personally do to cultivate greater health and balance?

For me, the value of a programme like this lies in being given something practical to return to.

Throughout the Five Immune Systems programme, participants receive guidance and deepen their experience of empowering methods, including:

• Left–Right Hand Meditation

• Xu Yin N Chanting

• Organising a Hunyuan Qi Field for Your Home

• Hun Yuan Ling Tong Chanting

• 5 Zang Organs Nourishment Meditation

• 5 Zang Organs La Qi

• Sound of Heart (Joy) Chanting

• Chen Qi • Qi Squats

• Finger Vibration Method

When I look at this list after nearly two years of working with the company, I think this is one of the things that makes the programme so valuable. These are not simply topics to read about. They are methods. Things we can actually practise. And that may sound simple, but I think it is an important difference

Join Us This September

This September, The Five Immune Systems in Zhineng Qigong will bring these ideas together through a combination of teaching, practice and exploration. With Master Yuantong Liu and Britta Stalling, participants will have the opportunity to explore the five immune systems more deeply and experience practical Zhineng Qigong methods for themselves. For me, the appeal of this programme is not simply learning what the Five Immune Systems are. It is understanding how they might relate to my own life. And then taking that understanding onto the practice mat.

Because ultimately, perhaps the most interesting part of Zhineng Qigong isn't simply learning about health. It's learning to become an active participant in cultivating it.
