The Silent Epidemic of Our Time

The Silent Epidemic of Our Time

By Britta StallingJune 10, 2026

This past May, 20 people from Europe, the U.S., and Asia once again gathered here in my second home, Cyprus, for a two-week training module to learn the methods of consciousness and Qi medicine taught by Qigong Master Yuantong Liu. I have the great honor of co-facilitating this training. Time and again, I am moved to observe how, within a short time, subtle layers of insecurity, worry, and fear transform into new strength, inspiration, courage, creativity, and joy of life.

Most people function, organize their daily lives, and seemingly shape their lives successfully—and yet one often senses something else beneath the surface: tension, fatigue, and fear.

The fear of no longer being able to keep up. The fear of illness, loss, or change. The fear of a future that no longer seems truly predictable.

Interestingly, both ancient philosophy and Qigong have been addressing precisely this question for centuries—not theoretically, but quite practically:

How does a person remain internally stable when life becomes uncertain?

In his book Thoughts Heal, Albert Kitzler reminds us that fear often arises less from the present moment than from our thoughts about the future. The mind produces scenarios, evaluates, controls, and worries—until at some point we are no longer truly living in the now. The Stoics already knew: it is not things themselves that trouble us, but our thoughts about them.

And this is precisely where a deep connection to Zhineng Qigong emerges. There, too, fear is seen as a state of constriction. The Qi contracts, and the person loses their natural openness and connection.

Many are familiar with this feeling: shallow breathing, pressure in the chest, racing thoughts, inner restlessness.

Today, it is often suggested that one must control, optimize, or "get rid of" fear. But perhaps it is precisely this resistance that intensifies the inner pressure even more.

Zhineng Qigong takes a different approach:

Do not fight. Open up.

Through conscious meditative movement and the focused direction of awareness, the inner state often changes surprisingly quickly. The body relaxes, the mind becomes calmer, and the Qi begins to flow again. And suddenly something emerges that many people have almost forgotten: inner spaciousness.

True stability does not arise from everything being secure on the outside. It arises when we learn to remain internally connected despite uncertainty—and not to give the outside world power over our inner state.

The Five Immune Systems of Human Resilience

This understanding resonates deeply with a central teaching in Zhineng Qigong Science: the concept of the Five Immune Systems.

When we hear the word "immune system," most of us think only of the body's ability to fight disease. Yet according to Zhineng Qigong, human wellbeing depends on much more than physical immunity. We also possess an Emotional Immune System, a Consciousness Immune System, an Energy Field Immune System, and a Membrane System Immune System.

Fear, chronic stress, worry, and emotional overwhelm can gradually weaken these systems. We may remain physically healthy, yet feel exhausted, disconnected, reactive, uninspired, or unable to navigate life's challenges with confidence.

Conversely, when we cultivate inner openness, emotional balance, clarity of mind, and a harmonious flow of Qi, all five systems are strengthened. We become more resilient, adaptable, and capable of maintaining our wellbeing regardless of external circumstances.

Perhaps this is one of the most important lessons for our times: resilience is not simply the absence of illness. It is the ability to remain grounded, connected, and fully alive in the midst of uncertainty.

For this reason, the theme of our September Life Changer program, The Five Immune Systems in Zhineng Qigong, feels particularly relevant. Together with Master Liu, we will explore practical methods for strengthening these five dimensions of health and cultivating a deeper sense of inner security, vitality, and emotional stability.

An Important Lesson from Master Liu

At the end of our time together here in Cyprus, I asked Master Liu a very personal question about a major challenge he had faced last year.

"Master Liu," I asked, "how are you doing today with this situation? Were you able to transform it for yourself?"

His answer came calmly and clearly:

"Oh yes. Because I don't want to give this situation and challenge power over me. I don't want it to control me."

I thought about these words for a long time.

Perhaps inner freedom begins exactly there: when we stop losing ourselves in the noise of other people, external circumstances, or difficult situations. When we find connection, inner stillness, and clarity within ourselves—and align ourselves with what is truly important to us.

In a time when fear and uncertainty seem to be everywhere, this may be one of the greatest forms of healing available to us.

Not the elimination of life's challenges. But the cultivation of an inner state that allows us to meet them with openness, wisdom, and trust.
